Chinese-operated supermarket raided in Kenya

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Surveillance teams from Kenya's certification body on Wednesday raided a Chinese operated supermarket in Nairobi and seized goods the officials said are substandard.

Gabriel Waiganjo, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Principal Surveillance Officer, said the officers who raided Yi Cheng Supermarket netted an assortment of goods which had not been labelled properly for the Kenya market.

"Following our market surveillance exercise, we have confiscated goods at Yi Cheng Supermarket located at Studio House along Argwings Kodhek Road; and we have given them a 14-day notice to appeal, thereafter, we will destroy all the seized goods," said the KEBS official who was leading the inspection.

According to Waiganjo, the seized food products and electrical appliances did not have a KEBS Import Standardisation Mark (ISM) hence should not be sold to consumers.

According to Kenya Standards and the East African Standards regulations, any goods sold to consumers must have clear labels written in English and or Kiswahili.

Meanwhile, KEBS on Tuesday conducted a raid at the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi and seized an assortment of substandard roofing sheets. Endit
