Oliveira wins Vuelta stage 13

Xinhua, September 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

A brave loan ride by Portuguese rider, Nelson Oliveira (Lampre-Merida) gave him victory in the 13th stage of the Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race on Friday.

Oliveira made a solo breakaway at the top of the final climb of the day and although he was hotly pursued by two other riders (Valerio Conte and Ruben Plaza), nobody was able to catch him as he rode on his own for around 44 kilometers from the finish line in Tarazona (central Spain).

The 13th stage also saw Nairo Quintana, who had been one of the pre-race favorites along with Chris Froome, before Froome was forced out with a broken foot on Thursday, struggle to keep pace with the main group, again strengthening the idea that it is virtually impossible for a rider to perform at their best in the Vuelta after competing in the Tour de France.

Meanwhile the overall standings are unaffected with Fabio Aru holding a 28 second lead over Joaquin Rodriguez and 3 more seconds over Tom Dumoulin.

Saturday's 14th stage, which starts in Vitoria and moves into the mountains of the north, could be decisive finishing with a first category and a special category climb in the last 65 kilometers finishing on the mountain top at Alto Campoo. Endite
