Uganda faces financial constraints ahead of 2015 All Africa Games

Xinhua, August 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda's sports governing body on Monday said that it is facing a financial crisis that may not enable it to send a big contingent to the 2015 All Africa Games scheduled for next month.

Jasper Aligawesa, Secretary to the National Council of Sports told Xinhua that the Council is facing a deficit of 550,000 U.S. dollars.

"There is no way we shall take the full contingent of 80 people if we don't get all the money," Aligawesa said.

The Games that bring together almost all African countries will take place Sept. 4-19. Uganda is expected to field athletes in boxing, athletics, badminton, tennis, basketball (women), swimming, table tennis, cycling, weightlifting and paralympics.

Aligawesa said they are looking at government to provide the deficit.

At the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, Uganda finished 14th with four gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Athletes Annet Negesa and three time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Moses Ndiema Kipsiro won gold medals in the 800 meters and 5000 meters respectively. Endi
