Five Ugandans qualify for Aiba World Boxing Championships in Qatar

Xinhua, August 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda has qualified five boxers for the AIBA (International Boxing Association) World Championships slated for Doha, Qatar Oct. 8-18.

"This brightens our chances of qualifying several boxers for the 2016 Olympic Games," Fred Kavuma, publicity secretary of the Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation told Xinhua on Monday.

The five boxers qualified through the African Boxing Confederation Championship, a 2016 Olympic qualifier that ended in Casablanca, Morocco on Sunday.

The five boxers who won bronze medals by losing in the semi-finals but qualified for the World Championship include; Fazil Juma Kaggwa (light flyweight), Rogers Semitala (bantamweight), Hassan Abdul (lightweight), Willy Kyakonye (heavyweight) and Michael Sekabembe (super heavyweight).

Kavuma said although they took eight boxers for the Championship in Morocco, they are happy that five have made it for the World Championships in Doha.

Gold medalists from Doha qualify for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
