Xinhua, August 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Burundian Intelligence Chief Lieutenant General Adolphe Nshimirimana was killed in an ambush at Kamenge neighborhood in the capital Bujumbura, a senior adviser at the Office of the Burundian president told Xinhua.

"Lieutenant General Adolphe Nshimirimana has died in an attack," said Willy Nyamitwe, senior adviser in charge of communication at the Burundian president's office.

Witnesses said several men in military uniforms bombed his car with a mortar shell at 9:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT).

Nshimirimana was working at the Office of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza and was in charge of missions.

Nshimirimana was known to have played a key role in neutralizing protests against President Nkurunziza's third term bid from late April to June. Enditem
