1st LD Writethru: Myanmar opposition party announces all its nominees to contest in forthcoming election

Myanmar's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, Saturday nominated 1, 133 people to contest in almost all constituencies at various levels of the parliament in the forthcoming multi-party general election scheduled for Nov. 8.

The party released the nominees' list for seven states and seven regions across the country.

The 1,133 nominees are enlisted to contest in 318 constituencies for seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House), 165 constituencies for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 621 constituencies for Region or State Parliaments and 29 constituencies for Region or State Parliaments for National Races.

Aung San Suu Kyi herself will compete in the constituency of Kawmhuu, a township in Yangon region, from where she won the 2012 by-election as a representative to the House of Representatives. The NLD altogether won 43 out of 45 then open parliamentary seats in the by-election.

A total of 89 political parties are registered with the Union Election Commission and the number of parties qualified to run the election is yet to be announced.

The nation's election commission has designated a total of 1, 171 constituencies across the country for vote for four levels of parliament representatives, with 330 constituencies set for election of the House of Representatives, 168 constituencies for the House of Nationalities, 644 constituencies for Region or State Parliaments and 29 constituencies for Region or State Parliaments for national races.

The 2015 general election is to produce parliamentary representatives to the next term of parliament and the next-term government is expected to be formed in early 2016. Endi
