Future of Singapore, Indonesia dependent on region: president

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore and Indonesia share a future which is dependent on peace, stability and prosperity in the region, said Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam on Tuesday.

President Tan held a state banquet for Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on his first official visit to Singapore. Tan said Singapore's excellent relationship with Indonesia is underpinned by close relations between leaders, strong defense cooperation and significant and constantly growing economic cooperation.

The global landscape has become increasingly unpredictable, with a slowing economy and new transboundary challenges and threats. "The need for solidarity and cohesion within ASEAN has become ever more important, even as the ASEAN Economic Community is set to be established at the end of this year," said Tan.

Tan also stressed that Indonesia has a critical role to play in the success of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and he look forward to continuing close cooperation in ASEAN.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Indonesia is currently expanding its infrastructure across the country. This incredible growth story presents amazing opportunities for Singaporean investors to grow with Indonesia.

Widodo and Tan also attended a certificate presentation ceremony for technical and vocational training program in ship building on Tuesday. Endi
