The Danish government has earmarked an extra 10 million Danish kroner (1.48 million U.S. dollars) in emergency aid to the civil war-ridden Yemen.
The money will be used to help over 21 million people who are victims of a humanitarian crisis due to the increasingly intense conflict in the country, the Danish foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The conflict between government forces and the armed Houthi militia in recent months has led Yemen into a deepening humanitarian crisis. And the blockading of its ports has made it difficult to get supplies to the population.
"The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is more serious and acute now than ever. 21 million people need some kind of emergency aid," said Denmark's Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen.
The United Nations classified last week the crisis in Yemen as level 3, which is the most serious classification of humanitarian disasters.
"The situation is desperate for the country's citizens and destabilizing for the entire region, which is already challenged by poverty, extremism and radicalization. Therefore Denmark is ready to meet the UN appeal and contribute where the need is greatest," Jensen said.
The 10 million kroner will go to support humanitarian efforts through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and will include, among others, distribution of food and other relief, health care and support for water supply.
Denmark's humanitarian aid to Yemen in 2015 has now reached 39.8 million kroner. (1 U.S. dollar = 6.76 Danish kroner) Endit
