Saudi says runaway militant killed in shootout with police

Xinhua, July 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Saudi Interior Ministry said Saturday that a wanted militant was killed in a shootout with police in Taif district after he refused to surrender, Al Arabiya News reported.

On Friday, a Saudi policeman was shot dead during a raid to arrest Islamic State (IS) suspects in Taif.

During the raid, Yousif Al Ghamdi managed to flee, but later was spotted by police inside a house in Taif, said spokesman for the Interior Ministry Major-General Mansoor Al Turki.

On Saturday, Police surrounded the house where Ghamdi refused to surrender and was killed in a fire exchange, the spokesman added.

The slain militant, 32, was among a list of terrorists wanted for supporting and promoting IS in the country as well as spreading terrorism threats.

According to the Interior Ministry's records, Ghamdi did not travel outside the country at all. He was sentenced nine years ago to six years in jail and 1,000 lashes in indecency criminal case. Also, three drug addiction cases were registered against him.

Saudi Arabia has been fighting terrorists and extremists in the country after a series of attacks against security forces by IS members and two suicide blasts that targeted Shiite mosques in the eastern region in May. Endit
