Afghan president meets visiting U.S. senator

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday met with visiting U.S. Senator John McCain at the Presidential Palace, said an official statement issued here.

"The two sides discussed enhancement of the U.S.-Afghan bilateral relations, fighting terrorism, regional cooperation, and America's long-term support and commitment for Afghanistan," the statement said.

The Afghan leader welcomed Senator McCain to Kabul and expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the United States to Afghanistan, it noted.

The two sides "termed terrorism and extremism as a threat to stability of Afghanistan, the region and the world, and stressed on continuation of the efforts to fighting it,"

"At the end of the meeting, the Republican senator from the state of Arizona reassured his country's enduring support to Afghanistan," the statement added.

McCain also met with Afghan Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah earlier on Saturday. Endi
