Police says Indian military kills 3 infiltrators on LoC

Xinhua, July 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian military Friday killed three infiltrators during a gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC), police said.

The gunfight, according to police, broke out inside the forest area of Boniyar in frontier Uri sector of Baramulla district, about 100 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today early morning an infiltration attempt was made by four to five people in Bonyar sector but the counter-infiltration force of the Indian military detected their movement, after which a gunfight broke out between the two sides," Deputy Inspector General of police Gareeb Das told media in Baramulla. "As of now we have reports that three militants have been killed in the stand off."

According to Das, the gunfight was still ongoing.

However, a statement issued by the Indian military said one militant was killed and another was wounded in the ongoing gunfight.

"The remaining militants took cover in the dense jungle and rocky terrain and as per last reports an operation is still in progress," the statement issued by military spokesman reads.

Reports said two Indian military troopers were also wounded fighting militants in the area.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

Last year a group of six infiltrators entered the Indian military garrison in Mohara-Uri and killed eight troopers including an officer and three policemen.

A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region.

New Delhi blames Islamabad for infiltrating militants into Indian-controlled Kashmir. However, Islamabad denies the charge, saying it only provides moral and political support to Kashmiris.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endi
