Leaders from all over the world will meet in Oslo next week to gather support for a joint effort to promote education in countries affected by conflict, crisis and poverty, the office of Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg said on Friday.
The Oslo Summit on Education for Development, slated for July 6-7, aims at mobilizing strong and renewed political commitment to reach the 58 million children who are still being denied their right to education and to improve learning outcomes for those who attend school, the office said in a press release.
Solberg will open the summit together with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. Norway's Crown Prince Haakon will also attend the opening of the summit.
Some heads of state and government, ministers, the leaders of a number of UN organisations and representatives of civil society, international organisations and the private sector will gather together to make a concerted effort to promote global education.
"I look forward to the discussions on how to mobilize for a strong and renewed political commitment to reach the 58 million children who are still being denied their rights to education," Solberg was quoted as saying.
The Oslo Summit will build on the outcomes of the World Education Forum in Korea in May 2015 and provide input to the third International Conference on Financing for Development in Ethiopia in July as well as the subsequent UN high-level meeting in September, according to the summit's organizers.
