Interview: Ghana looks forward to stronger ties with China: FM

Ghana and China have enjoyed win-win cooperation and Ghana looks forward to stronger ties with China, Foreign Minister Hanna Serwah Tetteh said on Thursday as the two nations mark 55 years of diplomatic ties this month.

Fruits of bilateral cooperation have been witnessed during the 55 years, with Chinese investment, both from government and private sector, in a number of key projects in Ghana, Tetteh said in an interview with Xinhua.

Projects like the Atuabo gas processing plant and the Bui hydropower dam built by China's state-run companies have promoted Ghana's economic development, she said.

At private sector level, there are projects like the Sunon- Asogli power plant in Tema city financed by the China-Africa Development Fund and Shenzhen Energy Group, reflecting the strengthening of Ghana-China ties.

"And so, this undoubtedly is a manifestation of the fact that we not only have friendly relations but those friendly relations have been to our mutual benefits and it is our hope that in the years to come that the relationship will continue to grow," Tetteh said.

Cooperation between the two sides has risen to a higher level in recent years and produced fruits in various fields with the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Forum, she added.

As for challenges in bilateral ties, specifically the issue of some Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining in Ghana and the security threats facing Chinese in Ghana, the two sides have vowed joint response efforts.

"Notwithstanding some of these problems that have occurred, there has been a good relationship... And I am optimistic that this will be a relationship that should grow from strength to strength," Tetteh said.

The Chinese Embassy in Ghana on Thursday night hosted a reception to celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties, attended by Ghana's Education Minister Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and other officials, foreign diplomats, students and representatives of Chinese community in Ghana.

"I fully believe that as long as we work hand-in-hand and keep close collaboration, we will be able to push forward China-Ghana relations, realize more brilliant achievements in the next 55 years, and build China-Ghana relations as a model of China-Africa cooperation," Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Sun Baohong said at the reception.

China and Ghana established diplomatic relations on July 5, 1960.

Trade between the two nations has surged to 5.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, making China one of Ghana's largest trade partners.
