Former Chelsea striker Anelka to manage Indian club

Xinhua, July 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka announced Friday that he will return to Mumbai City FC to take on the manager role and play in the Indian Super League's second season.

The 36-year-old international star, who scored two goals in the first season, will now replay his Chinese Super League experience in 2012. He managed and played for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in 2012 with former Chelsea team-mate Didier Drogba.

"We are all very excited to start this new season," said the former Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus star in a statement, adding he is eager to take on the new role and put a competitive team on the pitch.

"We will provide Nicolas all the support required to try and win the league this year," said Mumbai's owner Ranbir Kapoor.

Anelka won the job for his tactical knowledge and motivational skills, according to the club owner.

Anelka appeared in the second half of the ISL's inaugural season, but his two goals contributed little, as Mumbai City finished second from bottom of the eight-team league. This year's edition kicks off in Chennai on Oct. 3. Endit
