Algeria calls off friendly against Uganda's U-23 side

Xinhua, June 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Algeria Football Federation has called off an international friendly against Uganda's U-23 Olympic team, a senior official said here on Monday.

Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic, Uganda's head coach, told Xinhua that the match which had been planned for July 14 has been canceled because of some changes on the Algerian side.

Algeria and Uganda had hoped to use the international friendly to prepare their teams ahead of the next phase of the 2016 Olympic Games/2015 CAF U-23 Championship qualifier.

Uganda ejected Rwanda 4-1 on aggregate last month in the first round of the Olympic qualifier and will next face Egypt next month.

Sredojevic said after Algeria called off the friendly that they are now trying to get a game with Tunisia which could help them prepare better.

"It would be good to play Tunisia as a replacement because they play the same kind of football like the Egyptian team we are going to face," said Sredojevic.

In case Uganda eliminates Egypt in the last phase of the 2016 Olympic Games/CAF U-23 Championship qualifier, they will qualify for the African event that will take place in Senegal in December. The best three teams at the African event will automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil. Endi
