Germany condemns deadly hotel attack in Tunisia

Xinhua, June 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

The German government condemned Friday the deadly hotel attack in Tunisia and extended condolences to the Tunisian government.

"I am deeply shocked by the barbaric act of terror in Sousse, which killed many people, including many tourists. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms," wrote Merkel Friday in her condolence telegram to Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi.

Speaking of the issue of terrorism, the chancellor mentioned that leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) had pledged increased support to Tunisia in fighting Islamist terrorism at a summit held in Germany from June 7-8.

Merkel assured Essebsi of solidarity, saying Friday's attack "reinforces G7 country's determination to support Tunisia in the fight against terrorism with all their strength."

Earlier on Friday, a gunman opened fire on a Tunisian beachside hotel in the popular resort town of Sousse. At least 37 people were killed, including foreign holidaymakers, and 36 others injured, according to the Tunisian Ministry of Health. Endit
