23 rebels surrender in Afghanistan

Xinhua, June 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Some 23 Taliban militants surrendered to the government in eastern Afghanistan's province of Nangarhar on Tuesday, the provincial governor said. "Two group of local Taliban fighters, including their commanders named Zurmat Khan and Zarin renounced violence and joined government-initiated peace and reconciliation process Tuesday morning," governor Salim Khan Kandozai told Xinhua.

The former militants also handed over 22 rounds of guns in addition to a radio to security authorities in the province with Jalalabad as its capital, the official said, adding that "with the former insurgents' surrender, peace and stability would be further strengthened in several parts of the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital"

The Afghan government set up a High Peace Council and launched the peace and reconciliation process in 2010 to encourage Taliban to disarm and give up militancy against the government.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments. Endit
