Hamas rejects unilateral formation of new Palestinian gov't

Xinhua, June 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Islamic Hamas movement Wednesday rejected any unilateral formation of a new Palestinian government.

Hamas's main objection revolved around forming the new government without coordination or consultation with it and other Palestinian factions.

Gazan Hamas spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said in an emailed press statement that forming a new government should be conducted in coordination with Palestinian factions.

According to a well-informed official, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced Tuesday that the unity government, formed in June last year, will resign in the next 24 hours.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua that Abbas informed his Fatah Party's Revolutionary Council that he designated Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to form a new government.

Abbas didn't explain his decision to dismantle the current government, but he said, "So far Hamas hasn't replied with regards to allowing the government to operate in Gaza."

Abbas said he will present the unity government file at the upcoming meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee so as to decide the fate of the government. Endit
