Xinhua, June 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday called his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and extended best wishes on the occasion of the Muslim festival of Ramazan.

Modi stressed the need for having "peaceful" and "friendly" bilateral ties, after the two countries were engaged in a war of words recently, according to an official release.

In his telephone conversation with Sharif, Modi also announced that India's decision to release several detained Pakistani fishermen on the occasion of Ramazan.

Leaders from both sides exchanged sharp comments after Modi's critical remarks about Pakistan during his visit to Bangladesh earlier this month.

Remarks by Indian officials about the Indian military action against rebels on the India-Myanmar border one week ago also triggered sharp reaction from Pakistan. Endi
