Cuba dropped to last place of Pool C in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League after losing 3-0 against Argentina in the match played in Havana, local press reported Sunday.
The game was played Saturday night in Havana's Sports City Coliseum, where the Argentine squad absolutely dominated the Cuban team (25-23, 28-25, 25-21).
Cuba won 3-1 the game played last Friday, but on Saturday the island's team had a difficult time trying to attack and block and even Rolando Cepeda, the captain, was replaced in the second set.
"I am tired, the body is telling me how it goes. Today I tried but I could not give more," Cepeda told the press.
Argentina started strongly in the match opener but Cuba stole the lead at the first technical timeout. Both teams raced to the end of the first set until Cuba went up 23-22 from two blocks, but Argentina later answered with three consecutive points to close the first set 25-23.
Argentina easily controlled the Cuban advantage and took the second set win 25-18. Then, in the third set, Cuba had a sluggish start but concluded the set and match with an ace 25-21.
With this result, Canada leads Pool C with 18 points, followed by Bulgaria (10), while Argentina remains third followed by Cuba (5).
Next weekend, Cuba will play against Canada in Havana, while Argentina will meet Bulgaria, in the last series of Intercontinental-Group 2. Endi
