Judit Polgar appointed as head coach of Hungarian men's chess team

Xinhua, June 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hungary's famous chess grandmaster Judit Polgar was appointed as the head coach of the national men's chess team, according to a report on the website of the Hungarian Chess Federation.

President of the Hungarian Chess Federation Tamas Sesztak told a press conference in Budapest on Friday that the presidium of the federation unanimously voted confidence in the most successful female chess player of all time.

Former head coach Tamas Horvath himself initiated the change. Judit will lead the team for the first time at the European Championship in November.

Judit, born in 1976, is undisputedly the best female chess player in history. She had been the top ranked women's player in the world from 1989 until March 2015, when she was overtaken by China's Hou Yifan.

Judit led the Hungarian women's team to claim gold medals at the Chess Olympiad in 1988 and 1990. She was also a member of the Hungarian men's team that captured Olympiad silvers in 2002 and 2014.

Judit Polgar announced her retirement from competitive chess in August 2014. Endi
