A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Friday highlighted the importance of sustainable maritime development at the 25th Meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

"As a significant part of the post-2015 development agenda, sustainable maritime development is having an ever more important status and role in global politics, economy and the social development of humankind," said Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN. SEOUL -- Infections with the Middle East Respiratory syndrome (MERS) in South Korea increased to 138 on Saturday with 12 more cases added, while the death toll from the viral disease rose to 12, the health ministry said.

Among the 12 new cases were four people who caught the virus from 16th patient at Daecheong Hospital and Konyang University Hospital in the central city of Daejeon between May 22 and May 30, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. (S.Korea-MERS)

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Commerce Department on Friday set final dumping margins on imported passenger vehicle and light truck tires from China, signaling that it may impose punitive duties on those products.

The department made its affirmative final determination that these Chinese tires had been sold in the United States at dumping margins ranging from 14.35 percent to 87.99 percent. (U.S.-China-Dumping )

UNITED NATIONS -- At least 68 children were reportedly killed and 180 others injured since March last year as a result of conflict in eastern Ukraine, the UN Children's Fund ( UNICEF) said on Friday.

While no children were reportedly killed in the latest escalation near the town of Mariinka, west of Donetsk, there are anecdotal reports of children having been injured by heavy weapons fire. (UNICEF-Ukraine)

BOGOTA -- At least five people went into missing and 70,000 people from 13 communities were unreachable in a rain-triggered landslide in south-western Colombia Friday, said local authorities.

A team of emergency response crews reached the La Chivera region in the Cauca department where the landslide took place, and the crews would help with the aftermath of the landslide which happened on the highway between the towns of Jambalo and Toribio, according to Jorge Arias, mayor of Caloto, a city in Cauca.
