Ugandan teams leave for Elgon Rugby Cup tournament in Kenya

Xinhua, June 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda's men and women teams on Thursday left for neighboring Kenya ahead of the 2015 regional Elgon Rugby Cup scheduled for June 13.

The Elgon Cup pitting Uganda's men and women teams will be played at the RFUEA Grounds in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Robert Seguya, coach of the men's team told Xinhua that although they have lost several times to the more exposed Kenyan team, they are very prepared to get a good result in this first leg before the home game.

"We are going to be very cautious because we want to get a good result," said Seguya.

Scott Oluoch, one of the star players for Uganda said they will play very cautiously because they know what to expect from the Kenyan team. The other star players on the Ugandan team include Justin Kimono and Michael Wokorach.

Kenya 'A' team has not lost the Elgon Cup since 2013 and is eying to make it third in a row. Last year while trailing 14-21 in the first leg in Kampala, Kenya 'A' romped to a 34-0 shutout of Uganda that saw them win the Elgon Cup 48-21 on aggregate and make it a double victory over them since 2013.

In 2013, Ugandan Ladies were lucky to beat the Lionesses, winning the Cup 30-26 on aggregate after overturning a 17 -18 loss to Lioness to beat them 13-8 and carry the mantle.

This was not the case in 2014 as the Kenya Lionesses proved too strong for the Ugandan Lady Cranes as they posted a 39-10 home win for a 72-25 aggregate win that saw them reclaim the title.

The men's team includes Brian Odong, Asuman Mugerwa, Dennis Mullo, Alex Mubiru, Cyrus Watum, Ronald Musajja, Scott Oluoch, Dennis Mugambe, Charles Uhuru, Collins Kimbowa, Pius Ogena, Mathias Ochwo, Arthur Mpande, David Kyewalabye, Oscar Kalyango, Chris Lubanga, Justin Kimono, Michael Wokorach, Kevin Makmot, Joseph Aredo, Ramathan Govle, Lawrence Sebuliba and Gerard Sewankambo

The women's team includes Irene Zigge Irene, Scovia Aketo, Peace Mirembe, Fiona Nalubwama, Charity Atimango, Claire Anena, Fortunate Irankunda, Hellen Gizamba Hellen, Emmanuella Oroma, Stella Kyalikunda, Prossy Nakakande Prossy, Mary Nakanyike, Peace Wokorach, Charlotte Mudoola Charlotte, Harriet Kayonjo, Mathilda Tino Matilda, Brenda Kayiyi, Asha Nakityo, Hildah Nyiraguhirwa Hildah, Samiya Ayikoru Samiya, Rachael Babirye, Grace Auma and Mary Kyoita.
