France beat England 1-0 in rain-plagued women's World Cup game

Xinhua, June 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

France kept their unbeaten run against England on the international level as they won 1-0 on Tuesday in a group F match of the Women's World Cup here.

Eugenie Le Sommer scored the only goal as she blasted a powerful 30-meter right-foot at the top of the penalty area on the 29th minute.

According to FIFA, France never lost to England since 1974, including recent wins in the quarter-final in Germany 2011 and in the group stage in Euro 2013.

In another group F game, Colombia held a 1-1 draw with Mexico to make the group more complicated for advancing.

Veronica Perez's curled shot was palmed to the crossbar of Colombia goalkeeper Stefany Castano and bounced onto the ground. The goal-line technology shows the ball cross the line and Mexico went ahead 1-0 after 36 minutes.

Mexico seemed to pocket three points before Daniela Monyota fired the ball onto the crossbar and into the net to tie it on the 82nd minute.

Constrant rain and wind made it difficult for both group F matches at stadium of University of Moncton, which is 25 kilometers to Canadian east shores.

In group E in Montreal, Costa Rica forced a surprising 1-1 draw with Spain while Brazil lived up to expectation to beat South Korea 2-0.

Five-time World Player of the Year Marta scored Brazil's second goal, her 92nd international goal on the 93rd cap, to ensure the win for Brazil on 53rd minute.

Formiga opened the scoreline after 33 minutes for Brazil in the last game of the first group stage round of the tournament.

In an earlier match at Montreal Olympic Stadium, Vicky Losada put Spain ahead after 13 minutes, a milestone goal for the new-comers.

Before the celebration was cooled down, Costa Rica fought back from the re-start to set up Raquel Rodriguez in the penalty area to have an easy score for 1-1.

The tournament takes one-day rest on Wednesday before the start of the second round for six groups. Endi
