Alves signs new deal with Barcelona

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

FC Barcelona full back Dani Alves has extended his contract with the club until the end of June 2017, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

In what appears to be a last minute change of heart after announcing a fortnight ago that he expected to be leaving the club at the end of the month after being unable to reach agreement over a new deal, the 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a new two year deal with the option for a third season at the club.

"With the renewal of his contract, the Brazilian full back will start his eighth season with the club," confirmed the Barcelona website.

Alves joined Barca from Sevilla at the start of the 2008-9 season and has been a key player ever since, making 343 appearances and winning five league titles, three Champions Leagues, 3 King's Cups, 2 European Supercups, 4 Spanish Supercups and 2 World Club Championships.

Despite his ongoing contract negotiations he has been vital in this season's conquest of the league, cup and Champions League treble, which was completed with a 3-1 win over Juventus on Saturday night.

This agreement has been reached only hours before Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board will resign to prepare for new elections for the presidency and comes just a day after Barca signed wing back Alex Vidal from Sevilla for around 20 million US dollars. Endi
