Indian Army Tuesday carried out an operation along the India-Myanmar border inflicting " significant casualties" on two groups of Northeast insurgents, suspected to be involved in the killing of 18 soldiers in Manipur last week, said local media.
The early morning operation in Nagaland and Manipur along the border was carried out after the army received "credible and specific" intelligence that these militants were planning more attacks in the Indian territory, the Press Trust of India quoted Major General Ranveer Singh, Additional Director General Military Operations, as saying in Imphal, capital of Manipur.
"We have inflicted significant casualties on them. As a consequence, threats to our civilian population and security forces were averted," he was quoted as saying.
He said the army was in communication with Myanmar authorities on the issue and looked forward to working with them to combat such terrorism, according to the report.
Eighteen Indian Army soldiers were killed last Thursday near the Indian-Myanmar border by illegal armed militants who are active in the restive northeast region of the country. Endi
