41 militants give up fighting in E. Afghanistan

A total of 41 anti- government militants laid down arms and gave up fighting in Kunar province with Assadabad as its capital 185 km east of Kabul on Tuesday. "A total of 41 armed fighters under their commanders Mullah Khairullah and Abdul Halim gave up fighting and joined the government-backed peace process today and the government wants other militants to follow the step,"provincial governor Wahidullah Kalimzai said in a ceremony here to welcome the former insurgents.

With joining of these people who were involved in anti- government activities in different parts of the province over the past few years in the peace process, security will be further improved in the province, the governor added.

Taliban militants fighting the government are yet to make comment.

More than 4,000 militants, 384 of whom in Kunar province, have joined the government-backed peace process over the past year, a claim rebuffed by Taliban outfit as groundless. Endi
