Myanmar, Vietnam vow to enhance sectoral cooperation

Xinhua, May 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar and Vietnam have vowed to promote sectoral cooperation as part of their bid to boost ties, official media reported Friday.

Promotion of cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, marine products, oil and gas, communication, human resources development and trade topped the discussions between Myanmar President U Thein Sein and visiting Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in Nay Pyi Taw Thursday.

Minh, who arrived the Myanmar capital earlier, is to co-chair the 8th Vietnam-Myanmar joint committee on economics, trade, culture, science and technology cooperation, which contributes to promoting traditional relations with Myanmar, bolstering economic ties and increasing effectiveness of the committee.

Minh's visit followed that to Myanmar by Vietnamese Vice President Madam Nguyen Thi Doan in March, during which U Thein Sein and Doan also held talks on economic cooperation covering investment, banking, telecom, agriculture, livestock and tourism industry.

According to official statistics, Myanmar-Vietnam bilateral trade reached 239.28 million U.S. dollars in the fiscal year 2014- 15, of which Myanmar's export to Vietnam stood 56.05 million dollars, while its import from Vietnam took 183.23 million dollars.

Vietnamese investment in Myanmar topped 600 million U.S.dollars in 2014, ranking 8th in Myanmar's foreign investors' line-up. Endi
