EU calls on Lebanon to elect new president

Xinhua, May 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union on Monday called on all political forces of Lebanon to take decisive action to elect a new president, saying protracted presidential vacuum poses serious risks to the country as a whole.

The EU statement came as Monday marked the passage of one year since former President Michel Sleiman of Lebanon left office on May 25, 2014.

The protracted presidential vacuum has undermined the functioning of all institutions and Lebanon's ability to address the difficult security, social and economic challenges facing the country, the EU said.

The EU called on all members of the Parliament to uphold Lebanon's "longstanding democratic tradition" and to convene to elect a president without further delay in line with the constitution. Endit
