Berdych reaches second round at French Open

Fourth seed Tomas Berdych defeated Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets to reach the second round of the French Open here on Monday.

The Czech star, who entered the 2010 semifinals, faced little challenge from the 19-year-old Japanese, winning 6-0, 7-5, 6-3.

The 29-year-old will next face compatriot Radek Stepanek, who beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.

Spain's 11th seed Feliciano Lopez became the biggest name to fall as he was defeated by Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3.

In the women' s matches, Germany' s Sabine Lisicki, the 20th seed, beat Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 6-3, 6-2 while Roberta Vinci of Italy lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to local player Alize Cornet. Endi
