Tokyo stocks end above 20,000 for 1st time in 15 years

Tokyo stocks ended above the 20,000 threshold for the first time in 15 years as investor sentiment was lifted by robust trade data.

The 225-issue Nikkei index jumped 224.81 points, or 1.13 percent, from Tuesday at 20,133.90, the highest close since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 12.91 points, or 0.80 percent, to 1, 621.79.

Major gainers included brokerage, bank and insurance issues.

The turnover was 2,896.7 billion yen (about 24.21 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
