Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto Tuesday said the government "is working to reduce violence and create better conditions for social coexistence."
Pena Nieto admitted that violence continues to "threaten" parts of the country, but he touted recent statistics that show rates falling for certain crimes.
So far, during his term in office, authorities have arrested or killed 93 of the country's 122 most dangerous criminals, he added.
Between January and March, kidnapping complaints also dropped almost 24 percent, compared to the same period in 2012, said Pena Nieto, who came to power that year.
His administration was "advancing in the right direction," he said, announcing that during the first quarter of the year preliminary investigations into intentional homicides fell by 27 percent, compared to the same period of 2012.
"These are compelling examples of positive results and significant blows to the leadership of organized crime groups operating in the country," said the president.
Pena Nieto spoke during a ceremony marking the completion of first-year studies at the Naval Military Academy in Mexico City for cadets who enrolled in 2014 and are due to graduate in 2019. Endi
