One in three Ukrainians supports granting Russian language official status: poll

Xinhua, April 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

About one third of the Ukrainians show support for granting Russian official status as a second national language, a recent opinion poll showed Friday.

The poll, conducted by the Kiev-based International Institute of Sociology, found that 33 percent of the respondents would vote for making Russian the second national language in Ukraine if a referendum on the issue is held.

At the same time, the survey indicated that 48 percent of those polled would support Ukrainian as the country's only official language, while 10 percent were undecided.

And 9 percent of the respondents said they would not take part in a referendum on granting Russian an official status in Ukraine.

The nation-wide survey was carried out among 2,013 people from Feb. 14 to 24 and its margin of error was within plus or minus 1.4-3.3 percent.

According to a separate poll, conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology in 2013, about 40 percent of the Ukrainians considered Russian as the native tongue at that time. Endi
