Tanzanian police deny terror threat rumors

Tanzanian police on Friday denied rumors circulating on social media that the Arusha- based Institute of Accountancy was being targeted by terrorists.
An online message earlier urged people of Arusha to be careful and they should stay away from gathering due to a possible terror attack.
The message claimed that four people armed with guns went to the college on Thursday midnight and were later arrested by police.
Arusha Regional Police Commander, Liberatus Sabas, said the claims were false and were spread by "hooligans".
He therefore urged residents of the northern tourist city to stay calm as there is "no threat to the public".
"As police, we are aware of rumors circulating on social media and therefore would like to offer this reassurance," the police chief said.
Arusha Regional Commissioner Felix Ntibenda, also chairman of the Arusha regional security committee, said the city is safe as "police have intensified security in all key places across the city and nearby townships."
The rumors came after Somali militant group Al-Shabaab claimed to have a plot of attacking Tanzania's major cities of Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. Endi
