Bayern's David Alaba sidelined with knee injury

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bayern Munich suffered an injury blow as Austrian international David Alaba tore his medial ligaments in his left knee during a friendly, the German giants confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

As a consequence, the Bundesliga front-runnners will have to do it without their defensive key player David Alaba, who will be out of action for seven weeks, according to club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt.

The 22-year-old defender suffered the knee injury during Austria's 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at a friendly.

Alaba's injury is a huge setback for coach Pep Guardiola in the light of two upcoming quarterfinal fixtures, in the German Cup and UEFA Champions League.

"I am of course really disappointed, but, I have one goal: I want to return before the seasons final. I will make sure to recover before I will go for it in the rehab training," Alaba told the club's official homepage. The Austrian international returned only in November from an injury in his right knee.

Bayern will encounter Borussia Dortmund in the 27th round of Bundesliga on Saturday. However, Bayern will be without David Alaba, Javi Martinez, Arjen Robben, Thigao Alcantara and Franck Ribery, whose start is doubtful.

Bayern sit atop the standings with a ten-point gap to second placed Wolfsburg. Endite
