Minivan with 100 kg of drugs held in Latvia

Xinhua, March 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A minivan with roughly 100 kg of hashish was detained in the south-eastern Latvian city of Daugavpils earlier this month, law enforcement authorities said Tuesday.

The black market value of the drug haul is thought to be an estimated 1.2 million euros (1.29 million U.S. dollars), local media reported.

Acting on a tip-off from foreign colleagues, state police in collaboration with regional police detained the minivan and two Latvian men who had smuggled the narcotics into the country.

The narcotics had been packed into plastic food wrap and hidden all over the vehicle.

Two more arrests were made during the investigation, police said.

The suspects detained in connection with the case are 23 to 41 years old. Three of them have been remanded into custody. They now face charges of possession and trafficking of large amounts of narcotics in an organized group, a criminal offense carrying a prison term of up to 15 years. Endit
