Audi reports record revenue in 2014

German automaker Audi AG has increased its revenue to more than 53 billion euros (56.7 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time in 2014, the Ingolstadt-based company reported on Tuesday on its annual press conference.

The four rings company sold 1,741,129 automobiles worldwide to its customers last year, a year-on-year increase of 10.5 percent, surpassing its original unit-sales target of 1.7 million automobiles, according to its announcement.

China was Audi's biggest market in the world, contributed sales of 578,932 cars bearing the four-ring brand in 2014, up 17.7 percent from the 2013 level.

"We delivered more in 2014 than promised. After a very positive start to this year, we aim to achieve a new record for unit sales in 2015," Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said on the annual press conference, which attracted about 350 journalists from all over the world.

From January through December 2014, Audi reported to have invested almost 25 percent more than in the previous year, setting a new record with over 4.5 billion euros. By 2019, the company announced its plan to invest a total of 24 billion euros, focusing on technical innovations and new models.

Meanwhile, Audi grew by 5,732 employees in 2014. More than 80,000 people work for the Audi Group worldwide. This year it plans to recruit another more than 6,000 new employees worldwide for innovative areas, of whom 4,000 will be recruited in Germany, according to Thomas Sigi, member of Board of Management for human resources.
