Bulgarian minister of interior resigns

Xinhua, March 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian Minister of Interior Veselin Vuchkov resigned on Wednesday, less than four months after taking office, local media reported.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov accepted the resignation, according to the Government Information Service.

According to an official press release, Vuchkov resigned after requesting to launch procedures to replace the secretary general of her ministry, and the heads of the state agency for national security. However, the legal directorate of the government refused to do so.

"My decision is categorical," the press release quoted Vuchkov as saying.

Later on Wednesday, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the GERB party, said the resignation must be approved by the National Assembly.

Radan Kanev, co-chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Reformist Bloc, said the ruling majority strongly supported Vuchkov.

Kanev said the case was legal, not political, and had to be resolved.

The coalition government led by GERB party chairman Borissov took office on Nov. 7 2014 with the support of 136 legislators from his party, the Reformist Bloc, the Patriotic Front and ABV coalition, in the 240-member parliament. Endit
