Researcher hurt in lab blast at Liverpool University

A post-doctoral researcher has been injured in an explosion Wednesday at a university research block in Liverpool.

The area around the University of Liverpool's Chemical Research Department was sealed off, with major traffic diversions in place.

The blast smashed a number of fourth-floor windows, with the post-doctoral researcher, a member of the teaching staff, said to have suffered hand and face burns. Paramedics were giving on-the-spot emergency treatment to the injured male.

The first reports of the blast came at 08:48 GMT and immediately emergency services in the city declared a major incident. A fleet of police vehicles, ambulances and fire crews were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Fire officials have confirmed a man was injured after an explosion in a University of Liverpool chemical facility on Liverpool's Oxford Street. The identity of the injured man has not been released. An investigation into what happened is now underway by the university and emergency services.

The injured researcher has been taken for treatment at the emergency department at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Endit
