Industrial action to resume in Belgium

Xinhua, January 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Public service representatives in Belgium confirmed on Tuesday that they would return to industrial action this week as part of a lengthy action against the government's economic and social policies.

According to a statement by Michael Geyer, the president of the CSPF, which represents public service employees, workers will take part in an organized strike in Brussels on Wednesday.

Some 2,000 workers are expected to demonstrate on the streets of the Belgian capital.

Belgium was hit by a series of regional strikes in a protest against Prime Minister Charles Michel's center-right government's industrial and economic polices late last year. The actions culminated with a general strike on Dec. 15.

"To make the consolidation of public finances a priority is criminal. Austerity, especially in times of crisis, is a highly dangerous mix for our democratic freedoms," said a statement issued by the CSPF. Endit
