Bulgarian president calls for urgent reforms

Xinhua, January 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev on Tuesday called for urgent reforms in the judiciary, health, energy, education, administration, pension system, as well as in the security sector.

Addressing a business forum, Plevneliev warned that unreformed sectors and the accumulation of new debt posed serious threats to the country.

"Over the past 15 years, the governments have committed to the implementation of urgent reforms, but some of them are still in the initial phase, while others have not even started," Plevneliev said, according to his press office.

Broad political consensus for reform and coherence in the efforts of the parliament and government are necessary to achieve sustainable results, Plevneliev added.

According to the European Catch-Up Index 2014, eight years after joining the European Union, Bulgaria continues to lag behind in the process of convergence with more developed countries in Europe, ranking at the bottom in key categories such as economy, quality of life and good governance. Endit
