India's main opposition lodges complaint against anti-graft party chief

Xinhua, January 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's main opposition Congress party Monday lodged a complaint with the independent Election Commission against the head of the anti-corruption Aam Aadmi Party for urging people to accept money from rival parties but cast votes in his party's favor in Delhi polls, sources said.

Arvind Kejriwal, head of the Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man's Party) and former chief minister of Delhi, had a few days back appealed to people to accept money from the Congress and India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but cast their votes in favor of the anti-graft party.

"A complaint has been lodged against Kejriwal, citing it's a violation of the code of election conduct," the sources said.

Congress party's spokesperson Ajay Maken told the media Sunday that Kejriwal had insulted the people of Delhi. "Making such statements is illegal. It is like offering money to the people," Maken, who is also the poll campaign committee chief of the party in the Indian capital, said.

The Indian capital will go to polls on Feb. 7, with counting due on Feb. 10. Endi
