A man has died in police custody after being tasered by officers at a McDonald's restaurant in Bowral, the authorities said on Monday.
Police were called to the fast food restaurant at 9.30 p.m. on Sunday after a man claimed he had been attacked and then confronted police, police said.
The man was arrested and taken to Bowral Police Station where he died a short time later.
Assistant Commissioner Gary Worboys told a press conference on Monday that the 38-year-old man had been tasered.
"Police had cause to arrest a 38-year-old man who lives in Mittagong," Worboys said.
"It would have been a difficult situation inside that fast food restaurant.
"He was taken back to Bowral police station ... a short time later he died at the police station."
Worboys said the man fell to the floor during the confrontation which involved five police officers.
Police provided CPR to the man and were assisted by ambulance officers when they reached the station, Worboys said.
Police internal affairs will now investigate the incident, Worboys said.
