Croatian incumbent president Josipovic leads in election: first results

Xinhua, January 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Croatian Incumbent president Ivo Josipovic scored 52.49 percent of the vote in Sunday's presidential run-off, while opposition candidate Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic garnered 47,51 percent, according to preliminary results released by State Electoral Committe (SEC) on its official website.

The results come from 33.60 percent out of 6287 polling stations, 6,197 in Croatia and 90 abroad, most from big cities, SEC said.

SEC will announce official results Sunday night.

In the neck-and-neck first round on Dec.28, 2014, Josipovic won 38.46 percent of the vote, while Kitarovic got 37.22 percent.

Josipovic, 57, is supported by Social democratic Party, the biggest party in the government and other 18 parties. Grabar Kitarovic, currently Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy at NATO and former Croatian Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the United States, is supported, beside largest opposition party Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), by eight parties.

The Croatian president is elected every five years and can serve no more than two consecutive terms. Josipovic, the third president of the country, took office in 2010. Endit
