Algeria strongly condemns attack against UN mission in Mali

Xinhua, January 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Algeria on Sunday strongly condemned the "terrorist attack" targeting the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali (Menusma) in northern locality of Kidal, leaving several Senegalese soldiers wounded.

"Algeria expresses its solidarity with the Senegalese people and government, and extends condolence to the families of the injured soldiers," the official APS news agency quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying.

Algeria also reaffirmed its position to counter all forms of terrorism, adding that it is committed to regional and international efforts so as to achieve sustainable peace and stability in Mali.

The attack coincides with the cabinet reshuffle, in which Moussa Mara was appointed as the new prime minister.

Since 2012, Mali has been troubled by intense political and security crisis after extremist groups took control of the north of the country. But a French-led military intervention chased them away.

The UN mission in Mali has been on the ground in a bid to put the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Algeria has been trying to bring the Malian warrant parties to the negotiating table. Since June, 2014, three rounds of peace talks have been held. Endit
