Tokyo stocks open higher on U.S., European shares gains

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher Friday following gains by U.S. and European shares.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 128.65 points, or 0.75 percent, from Thursday to 17,295.75.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 6.00 points, or 0.44 percent, to 1,383. 67.

Major gainers included marine transport, precision instrument and insurance issues. Endi
