Magnitude 6.9 earthquake shakes Indonesia's West Java

Xinhua,December 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

JAKARTA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- An 6.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia's populous West Java province on Friday night, the Indonesian Meteorological Agency said, but no casualties or damage have been reported so far.

The quake struck at 23:47 local time (16:47 GMT). The epicenter was 11 km southwest of Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java province, 102 km from West Java's capital Bandung with a depth of 107 km in the earth.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 6.5 with a depth of 91.9 km.

The one-minute quake could be strongly felt in the country's capital Jakarta more than 200 kilometers northwest of the epicenter. People rushed out of their homes in fear as buildings trembled in the capital.

The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency has issued tsunami warnings for regions off the southern coast of Java Island's West Java province, Central Java province and Yogyakarta Special Region.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" where several tectonic plates meet, making it vulnerable to frequent earthquakes. Enditem
