Third day of Rio Pro called off

Xinhua, May 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

The third day of competition at the Rio Pro was postponed on Thursday due to poor conditions at Praia de Itauna.

Officials said the World Surf League (WSL) event was likely to resume on Friday with expectations of an improved swell.

"We've got pretty bad waves today and there is actually a pretty bad wind already," WSL deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said.

"We are going to call the competition off for the day. We are looking at much better surf for tomorrow. It is definitely meant to be picking up and the wind is also looking to be much better than it is today. We will come back tomorrow and hopefully we will be on."

Australian Julian Wilson has been the most impressive performer so far, notching a combined wave score of 16.34 on Tuesday's opening day.

Brazil's 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina progressed to the third round on Wednesday by defeating countryman Jesse Mendes after losing his opening heat on Tuesday. Endit
