Turkey's top election board confirms referendum results

Xinhua, April 27, 2017 Adjust font size:

Turkey's Supreme Election Board Thursday announced the official results of the constitutional referendum, confirming a victory for the "Yes" camp with 51.41 percent.

The "No" camp received 48.59 percent of the votes, and voter turnout stood at 87.45 percent, the board said.

The referendum including 18 constitutional amendments will see Turkey switch from a parliamentary system to a presidential system of governance.

The first presidential and parliament election under the new constitution will be held in 2019. After the 2019 elections, the post of prime minister will be abolished.

The board also officially rejected the appeal of the main opposition Republican People's Party to render the result invalid on Thursday. Endit
