Ethiopian PM tours Rwanda's model rural settlement

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Thursday toured a model rural settlement project in eastern Rwanda.

The Ntebe model village, in Rwamagana district, brings together communities where they can work together in sectors such as agriculture and share yields and profits, with easy access to schools, health centers, water, power and sanitation infrastructure, Rwanda's Minister of Local Government Francis Kaboneka said.

Desalegn arrived in Kigali on Thursday on a three-day state visit.

Rwanda and Ethiopia are expected to sign a number of joint partnership agreements this week aimed to boost cooperation in various areas.

Development of the Ntebe model village for internally displaced persons (IDPs) began in 2008. The village now has 772 beneficiaries in 204 households.

Rwanda targets to settle 70 percent of its rural population in model villages by 2020, up from the current level of about 55.8 percent, according to Rwanda local government officials.

Desalegn is scheduled to tour terraces in Gicumbi district in northern Rwanda on Friday, before addressing a joint press conference with his host, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, in Kigali. Endit
